Academic and IT Collaboration: Enabling the Digital Transformation of Learning Together
Note: This session is only for higher education college and university attendees and invited Diamond and Platinum Sponsor Representatives.  Admission for sponsors designated by color-coded name badge ribbons.

IT and academic departments and staff are in the midst of a full-scale digital disruption. Driven by the ubiquity of today’s rapidly developing technology and the influence of trends like AI and the Internet of Things, institutions are being forced to take a fresh look across the institution’s enterprise ecosystem to redesign business processes that will result in higher efficiency, less customization, and better alignment of technology with the core mission of the institution. Shaping their actions are concerns for student success, greater attention to managing the student lifecycle, flexible approaches that accelerate change management, and the inclusion of academic transformation and innovation in almost all strategic discussions.

This working session will be led by institutional leaders who are repositioning IT as an enabler of innovation and change—by reimagining enterprise collaborations, procurement processes, and integration strategies—to enable meaningful digital transformation. This session will generate awareness for effective practices based on open standards that will make it easier for faculty to innovate with technology by providing them with more efficient ways to manage student teams and roles across multiple learning tools, give them more control to integrate third-party resources, apps, and tools in the LMS—wherever and whenever—and ensure that assignment and grade results are automatically synced to the gradebook of record.

Participants will engage in open discussion and collaborative brainstorming and come away with practical ideas and resources to take back to their campuses so they can begin or continue to evolve their digital ecosystem into a transformative and easily extensible environment that offers a much higher return on innovation, student engagement, and better retention strategies.

Audience:

  • Academic vice provosts or other high-level leaders who are involved with teaching and learning  technology
  • Vice Presidents of Technology and CIOs
  • Directors of Student Success Initiatives and Academic advisors
  • High level IT managers of enterprise and edtech systems
  • Directors of Academic Computing and Online Education/e-Learning
Note: This session is only for higher education college and university attendees and invited Diamond and Platinum Sponsor Representatives.  Admission for sponsors designated by color-coded name badge ribbons.

Building and Envisioning a Next Generation Digital Learning Environment
To provide a better experience for students, Penn State adopted an open source approach to their next-generation digital learning environment and how courses are managed, which envisions learning systems as a suite of tools. Instead of simply funneling learners back into an LMS, PSU created an ecosystem called ELMS: Learning Network where the traditional LMS is just one piece in the delivery of educational materials. More Than an eBook - Paving the Way for Meaningful In-Text Assessments
For years, students have answered the questions at the end of the chapter, relying on in-class grading or odd-numbered answers at the back of the book to find out whether or not they understood the material. At best, students were left with delayed feedback. At worst, they found themselves unequipped for the next test. This year, VitalSource and Wiley have partnered with IMS and the W3C to invent the next release of the ePub for Education standard. Focusing on in-text assessments, this new standard helps to evolve the reading experience. Instead of passively reading a chapter, students will engage with content in new ways, receiving timely feedback on their comprehension of key concepts. The new standard also provides transparency to educators, ultimately informing student success strategies and powering even earlier intervention efforts.

BIG NEWS: Account Provisioning Just Got Faster, Easier, and Smarter
Join ClassLink CTO, Stan Watts and CEO, Berj Akian, as they unveil the company’s new account provisioning platform, OneSync. OneSync serves as a hub that connects any number of data sources, including student information, HR, and OneRoster database, to one or multiple directories, including Microsoft Active Directory, Azure/O365, and Google. OneSync not only automates account provisioning, it provides bidirectional account syncing, enabling schools to maintain accurate accounts and quickly and securely eliminate old or out of date accounts from their directory.

Coupled with our RosterServer, which leverages OneRoster from IMS Global Learning, schools can now seamlessly provision Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams simultaneously, something no platform could provide until now.

Come see a demonstration and hear the story behind OneSync, how it is currently performing in districts around the country, and why this will set a new bar for streamlining directory management. And if this doesn’t get you excited, we’ll have awesome door prizes too. Who can resist getting back countless hours spent managing directories (much less, the chance for cool prizes)?

Finding the Eye of the Storm: Rescuing Instruction After a Natural Disaster
This session would show how our Due Date Changer LTI helped with the recovery efforts of UCF after the Category 3 Hurricane, Irma, swept through Florida. The damage by Irma caused UCF to close for over a week, including pausing our online courses. When we reopened, faculty needed a better way to update their syllabi and due dates. LMS tools were available, but time consuming and inefficient. Our Due Date Changer beta tool was pushed out to all courses, and to the delight of faculty what could have taken hours could be done in just  minutes with an easy to use UI/UX to update all due dates in one screen. They were able to then focus on their course, their students, and the rest of the recovery process.

Advances in technology have made it possible for states to share test items, significantly reducing costs to develop and administer federally-mandated state assessments. A number of states are entering into test item sharing agreements (or have plans to) with other states. In addition, some states are standardizing on one platform to support both summative state tests and benchmark assessments, creating item banks that facilitate teacher collaboration and reduce costs. All of these developments bring potentially powerful benefits but also present some challenges, which we explore as a panel and with you, the audience: creating sharing agreements with other states, ensuring assessment content portability through standards requirements and certification, and working with your vendors/suppliers.

How Startups And Educational Institutions Are Partnering To Enable A Plug-And-Play Ecosystem
In the past few years, digital learning technologies have become mainstream for higher education institutions and K-12 school districts, with more than $12 billion spent on edtech in 2017 alone. With technology options rapidly evolving, educators and companies alike need to balance speed-to-market with durability of solutions. Standards help ensure that technology offerings are both 'future-proofed' and able to evolve over time. As a result, its more important than ever for technology leaders to understand (and be able to communicate) the critical role that standards play in the adoption, use, scaling and impact.  Join us for a lively session with industry thought leaders and entrepreneurs focused on edtech efficacy and credentialing, as we discuss how our industry can more rapidly deploy a plug-and-play ecosystem that works more seamlessly to instrument decision-makers and learners with the interoperable tools, metrics and credentials they need to advance.

Current State of Accessibility and Interoperability
The current state of accessibility and interoperability varies greatly from vendor to vendor and state to state. While a number of states and vendors have embraced QTI for interoperability and accessibility, only a fraction of the formative and interim tests that are administered each year support QTI for interoperability and accessibility. What's more, district-level assessments and testing platforms are far less likely to have the accessibility features needed to test all students online. How do we overcome these obstacles and improve the testing experience for all students?

Negotiating Data Ownership: Institutional and Supplier Collaboration
Institutional data has been a forefront concern of institutions for the past several years. Ranging from governance policies to leveraging data to informing institutional strategies and decision-making, to impacting teaching and learning, discovering what data institutions have and can easily access is paramount.  Although institutional systems account for some of this data, a vast amount of it is generated, held and at times controlled by third-party systems. Developing an institutional data strategy is not as straightforward as it sounds. In this session presenters will take a deeper look at how data ownership needs to be a negotiated process that touches all parts of the institution—from faculty to academic and IT leadership—to understanding who owns the data analysis.

Challenges and Opportunities: Moving Digital Assessment Forward
The development and administration of assessments in our schools presents states, districts, and vendors with opportunities to build testing solutions that benefit teaching and learning.  For many years, due to federal legislation, the emphasis on state testing has been around accountability, but under ESSA there is an opportunity to develop assessment systems that go beyond accountability and actually increase student achievement. This panel, and audience discussion, will focus on actions we can take as a community to address the opportunities and challenges facing the digital assessment movement as we leverage technology to develop assessments that are more fair, valid, and reliable measures of student learning.

Bringing Adaptive Learning to Scale
Adaptive learning offers the promise of resolving Bloom's two-sigma problem by pairing mastery learning with analytics that empower instructors to conduct targeted interventions. Creating adaptive courses, however, requires disruption of traditional learning and teaching models as well securing a variety of resources - tools, staff, content, etc. The American Women's College at Bay Path University has developed several strategies to address these challenges while rapidly scaling implementation of adaptive course design. A lack of technical standards remains as a barrier.
